Catalyzes the irreversible ATP-dependent transformation of 5-formyltetrahydrofolate (5-CHO-THF) to form 5,10-methenyltetrahydrofolate (5,10-CH=THF). The reverse reaction is catalyzed by the serine hydroxymethyltransferase GlyA (SHMT).
