codA

Gene
codA
Protein
Choline oxidase
Organism
Arthrobacter globiformis
Length
546 amino acids
Function
Catalyzes the two-step oxidative conversion of choline to glycine-betaine with betaine aldehyde as an intermediate. Glycine-betaine accumulates to high levels in the cytoplasm of cells to prevent dehydration and plasmolysis in adverse hyperosmotic environments. Accepts either choline or the reaction intermediate betaine-aldehyde as substrate.
Similarity
Belongs to the GMC oxidoreductase family.
Mass
59.83 kDa

Gene
codA
Protein
Cytosine deaminase
Organism
Escherichia coli (strain K12)
Length
427 amino acids
Function
Catalyzes the hydrolytic deamination of cytosine to uracil. Is involved in the pyrimidine salvage pathway, which allows the cell to utilize cytosine for pyrimidine nucleotide synthesis. Is also able to catalyze deamination of isoguanine, a mutagenic oxidation product of adenine in DNA, and of isocytosine. To a lesser extent, also catalyzes the conversion of 5-fluorocytosine (5FC) to 5-fluorouracil (5FU); this activity allows the formation of a cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agent from a non-cytotoxic precursor.
Similarity
Belongs to the metallo-dependent hydrolases superfamily. Cytosine deaminase family.

47.591 kDa
