bcsQ

Gene
bcsQ
Protein
Cellulose biosynthesis protein BcsQ
Organism
Escherichia coli (strain K12)
Length
250 amino acids
Function
Essential for cellulose biosynthesis, shown for strain 1094, a commensal, natural cellulose producer (PubMed:19400787). Also shown in strain W3110 which has a restored reading frame (TAG stop codon to TTG for amino acid 6, called strain AR3110) (PubMed:24097954, this protein). May play a role in subcellular localization of an active cellulose biosynthesis apparatus at the bacterial cell pole (PubMed:19400787). The combination of cellulose and the curli fiber network confer cohesion, elasticity and tissue-like properties to colonies (PubMed:24097954).
Similarity
Belongs to the BcsQ family.

Gene
bcsQ
Protein
Putative cellulose biosynthesis protein BcsQ
Organism
Escherichia coli (strain K12)
Length
242 amino acids
Function
A C-terminal pseudogene fragment of BcsQ, which has a premature stop codon at position 6 of the intact protein. The mutation prevents cellulose synthesis, and has polar effects on transcription of downstream gene bcsA and probably also bcsB, bcsZ and bcsC (PubMed:24097954). When the reading frame is restored cellulose biosynthesis is also restored, see (AC P0DP92) for an intact protein. May play a role in subcellular localization of an active cellulose biosynthesis apparatus at the bacterial cell pole (By similarity).
Similarity
Belongs to the BcsQ family.
