Function
Lanthionine-containing peptide antibiotic (lantibiotic) active on Gram-positive bacteria. Macedovicin inhibits a broad spectrum of lactic acid bacteria, several food spoilage species (e.g. Clostridium spp.) and oral streptococci (PubMed:23122510). The bactericidal activity of lantibiotics is based on depolarization of energized bacterial cytoplasmic membranes, initiated by the formation of aqueous transmembrane pores.
