IMP1

Gene
imp1
Protein
Importin subunit alpha-2
Organism
Schizosaccharomyces pombe (strain 972 / ATCC 24843)
Length
539 amino acids
Function
Functions as a component of the nuclear pore complex (NPC). NPC components, collectively referred to as nucleoporins (NUPs), can play the role of both NPC structural components and of docking or interaction partners for transiently associated nuclear transport factors. Active directional transport is assured by both, a Phe-Gly (FG) repeat affinity gradient for these transport factors across the NPC and a transport cofactor concentration gradient across the nuclear envelope. Involved in nuclear protein import. Required for efficient nuclera import of both an SV40 nuclear localization signal-containing reporter protein and the pap1 component of the stress response MAP kinase pathway. Required for proper mitotic progression.
Similarity
Belongs to the importin alpha family.

Protein
Mitochondrial inner membrane protease subunit 1
Organism
Saccharomyces cerevisiae (strain ATCC 204508 / S288c)
Length
190 amino acids
Function
Catalytic component of the mitochondrial inner membrane peptidase (IMP) complex. IMP catalyzes the removal of signal peptides required for the targeting of proteins from the mitochondrial matrix, across the inner membrane, into the inter-membrane space. The two catalytic IMP subunits seem to have non-overlapping substrate specificities. IMP1 substrates include nuclear encoded CYB2, mitochondrially encoded COX2, NADH-cytochrome b5 reductase and GUT2.
Similarity
Belongs to the peptidase S26 family. IMP1 subfamily.
