CIII

Gene
cIII
Protein
Protease inhibitor III
Organism
Escherichia phage lambda
Length
54 amino acids
Function
Acts as a host protease inhibitor that allows the virus to initiate latency. Following infection, prevents protein cII degradation by inhibiting host protease FtsH (cII is a factor that initiates the expression of repressor cI, the major component promoting latency). Functions as a competitive inhibitor (and thus as alternative substrate) of host FtsH and thereby prevents binding of cII substrate. In turn, stabilization of cII transcriptional activator allows protein cI expression and thus initiation of latency.
Similarity
Belongs to the lambda phage cIII protein family.
Mass
6.047 kDa

Gene
CIII
Protein
Regulatory protein CIII
Organism
Escherichia phage HK022
Length
44 amino acids
Function
Presence of the CIII protein in the cell results in the stabilization of the CII transcriptional activator (a very unstable protein), CII activates CI, the gene for repressor, and thus promotes the establishment of lysogeny.
Similarity
Belongs to the lambda phage CIII protein family.
Mass
4.994 kDa
