Function
Involved in the biosynthesis of (S)-coclaurine, the common precursor of all benzylisoquinoline alkaloids such as morphine, sanguinarine, codeine or papaverine. Catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group to norcoclaurine to form coclaurine. Methylates (R,S)-norcoclaurine, (R)-norprotosinomenine, (S)-norprotosinomenine and (R,S)-isoorientaline.
