This sigma factor is the primary sigma factor during exponential growth (By similarity). Also required for extracellular A-signal production. The A-signal is the first in a series of extracellular signals that are required for myxspore differentiation in M.xanthus. It is thought to act as a cell-density signal during early development to ensure there are enough cells present to complete fruiting-body morphogenesis. A variant at residue 598 prevents A-signal production in an unknown fashion.
