Antimicrobial protein which is essential for the homeostatic regulation of sleep. Promotes sleep following sleep deprivation or bacterial infection and increases survival following bacterial infection. Likely to promote survival to bacterial infection in two ways; by contributing to the innate immune response and by promoting sleep during sickness to aid recovery.
