Protein
Inosine-5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase
Organism
Penicillium brevicompactum
Function
Catalyzes the conversion of inosine 5'-phosphate (IMP) to xanthosine 5'-phosphate (XMP), the first committed and rate-limiting step in the de novo synthesis of guanine nucleotides, and therefore plays an important role in the regulation of cell growth (By similarity). Part of the gene cluster that mediates the biosynthesis of mycophenolic acid (MPA), the first isolated antibiotic natural product in the world (PubMed:21398490). Does not play a role in the biosynthesis of MPA, but is involved in self resistance to MPA, since MPA acts as an inhibitor of IMP dehydrogenases (PubMed:21923907).
Similarity
Belongs to the IMPDH/GMPR family.
