Catalyzes the sequential condensation of isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP) with the allylic pyrophosphates, dimethylallyl pyrophosphate (DMAPP), and then with the resultant geranylpyrophosphate (GPP) to the ultimate product farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP). Has a greater affinity for DMAPP versus GPP.
